Dialogue Summary
AI and youth employment are increasingly intertwined as artificial intelligence reshapes how young people enter and navigate the workforce. This dialogue brought together participants from the United States, Türkiye, Tunisia, and the UAE to examine how AI is transforming early career pathways, skills development, and the connection between education and employment. Rather than focusing on broad predictions about job loss, participants focused on how AI is restructuring entry-level work and changing how young people access meaningful employment.
Participants identified the restructuring of entry-level roles as a central issue. Routine cognitive tasks—such as drafting, basic analysis, and administrative support—have long served as a training ground for early career workers. These roles helped young people build judgment and develop professional habits. As AI automates or reshapes these tasks, employers now expect young workers to demonstrate higher-order capabilities—such as synthesis, critical evaluation, and decision-making—much earlier, often without giving them the chance to build those skills through experience.
The discussion also highlighted a growing disconnect across institutions. Employers are rapidly integrating AI and redefining skill needs, while education systems continue to rely on slower-moving curricula and credentialing models. At the same time, AI-assisted outputs are undermining traditional assessment methods, making it harder to measure understanding and judgment. This misalignment places the burden of adjustment on young workers.
Participants also challenged assumptions about digital readiness, emphasizing that many young people still lack basic digital skills and reliable access. These gaps complicate efforts to advance AI and youth employment across different contexts. In lower-capacity settings, priorities include digital literacy and infrastructure; in higher-capacity systems, the focus shifts to aligning education with rapidly evolving labor markets.
Across both sessions, participants stressed that outcomes in AI and youth employment are not predetermined. Policy choices, institutional adaptation, and investment decisions will determine whether AI expands opportunity or deepens divides.
